What Does a Short-Form Video Editor Do?

"Editing" undersells what a short-form video editor actually does. The job isn't just trimming clips together: it's shaping raw footage into something that earns attention in a feed where the average viewer decides whether to keep watching within a couple of seconds.

Reviewing and selecting footage

Before any cutting happens, an editor reviews the raw footage: a podcast recording, a talking-head take, UGC clips: and identifies the strongest moments: the clearest point, the most quotable line, the most visually interesting section. For long recordings, this alone can take longer than the actual edit.

Building the hook

Short-form platforms are unforgiving about the opening. A short-form editor often reorders footage so the strongest line or moment comes first, trims dead air from the opening seconds, and sometimes tests more than one opening to see which earns the strongest hold.

Pacing and structure

Once the hook is set, the editor paces the rest of the video: cutting out filler words and pauses, adding cuts or zooms to maintain visual movement, and structuring the middle so it builds toward a payoff rather than trailing off.

Captions, b-roll and sound

Most short-form video is watched with sound off at least some of the time, so captions are close to mandatory. Editors add burned-in captions, supporting b-roll where it helps illustrate a point, background music or sound effects, and clean up audio levels so dialogue is clear.

Motion graphics and formatting

Basic motion graphics: titles, callouts, simple transitions: help emphasize key points without turning a short-form video into a production. Editors also format each video correctly for the platform it's going to: vertical 9:16 framing, safe zones for on-screen UI, and export settings that hold up to platform compression.

Revisions and delivery

Editing rarely ends after the first cut. A good short-form editor builds in a revision process, incorporates feedback, and delivers finished files in a way that's easy to review and publish: not just a raw export dropped in a folder.

In short: a short-form video editor's job is to turn raw, often messy footage into a video that's built specifically to perform in a feed: which is a meaningfully different skill from traditional long-form video editing.
