How to Turn a Podcast Into Short-Form Content

A podcast episode is one of the most efficient sources of short-form content, because the raw material: conversation, stories, opinions: already exists. The work is in finding the right moments and reshaping them for a feed instead of a full-episode listener.

1. Record with short-form in mind

You don't need to change your podcast format, but recording in video (not just audio) and framing the shot reasonably tightly makes it much easier to produce usable vertical clips later.

2. Identify strong moments

Go through the episode looking for: a strong opinion or hot take, a story with a clear beginning and payoff, a genuinely quotable line, a moment of visible reaction or emotion, or a concise, standalone piece of advice. These tend to make the strongest standalone clips, as opposed to sections that only make sense with full episode context.

3. Note timestamps

As you or your editor listens through, timestamp candidate moments rather than trying to edit while listening. This turns editing into a more structured, repeatable process, especially at volume.

4. Edit each clip as its own video

Each clip needs its own hook: often the strongest line from that segment, moved to the front: clean pacing with dead air removed, and a self-contained structure so it makes sense without the rest of the episode.

5. Add captions and reformat for vertical

Burn in captions, reframe the shot for 9:16, and add any simple visual support: speaker labels, basic motion graphics: that helps the clip read clearly on a small vertical screen.

How many clips can you get from one episode?

It depends heavily on episode length and content density, but a single 45-90 minute episode often yields anywhere from 5 to 15+ usable short-form clips. A weekly podcast can realistically supply a meaningful share of a monthly short-form content plan on its own.

If you'd rather not spend hours scrubbing through recordings, this is exactly what our podcast video editing service handles as part of your 20 monthly videos.
